Spurs-Thunder exceeded the hype in game one of the Western Conference Finals. In the East, will the Knicks continue to look like a team of destiny?

The ED/BC Podcast. You think you hate it now, but wait until you listen to it.

SPEAKER_01

Welcome back to another edition of the EDBC podcast. Eric Dobratz and Brian Coleman on May the 19th, taping this a little before noon on a Tuesday. Brian, we got the Subway series we got to reconnect, and I'm proud of you for the limited trolls. Although I'm not sure you saw the end of the Yankee Met game on Sunday. We'll get to that in a minute. But I got to start with Brian. Listen, last night I was into it. I'm surprised I was into it. The Western Conference Finals, the hockey two. I was into the hockey two, had them both. I was at work, so the ability to have like six screens going at once, which you know, the drill over there at New Zealand. It's great. My first reaction to the basketball, Brian, is I felt like I was watching Kareem Abdul Jabbar on steroids.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, talking about Victor Wembiyama, Wemby. In double overtime, the Spurs knocking down the Oklahoma City Thunder. Oklahoma City coming into the Western Conference Finals, Eric undefeated and really much pretty much untested. And the Spurs coming in after coming in after a good win against the T-Wolves. I told you last week, I know a lot of people were like maybe waiting for the Knicks to play whomever, and this was like, you know, the small markets is just gonna have national tension. I thought this would be a terrific series. Um game one. You couldn't it to say it surpassed the hype is is is is an understatement. It's interesting. Karima, yeah, and Wemby was amazing. I I had a different thought. I was like, I remember because I'm an old MBA, I'm old and I'm a long time NBA fan. I remember you like David Robinson won the MVP, like, and I think Akeem came in second that year in their first playoff. Yeah, and then went out in the playoff game and smoked him. And SGA getting announced at the end of night that he had won his second consecutive MVP, which is fine. He's been on he had a great year. Um, and Wemby like coming in, I think second or third, I forget what. And Wemby saying, okay, you can have your MVP, but this is what you're dealing with for this series. I thought that's exactly what I thought. And Wemby was amazing. But everybody was. I mean, you know, Spurs were great, Dylan Harper was the rookie was great, our buddy Stefan Castle. And, you know, Oklahoma City also just Alex Caruso. I love that guy from Oklahoma City. What the hippetical comes off the bench, does everything guy. I mean, just what a he's like a reminds of like Vinny Johnson, except not just all not just all offense. He's just instant, he's just everything he does, he comes off the bench. He gives you like a you know a shot, like his he's like an energy shot.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, he's he's a he's a he's like a winning player you want on your team. Absolutely. You know what I mean? Gets all the loose balls. Uh just he was fun to watch. And uh listen, I'll admit, did I watch a bunch of Western Conference basketball this year? Absolutely not. I don't stay up late to watch those games. Uh you know, I follow it a little bit, but I'm not, and that was the first time I really focused on watching uh Victor Wimanyama play. And man, he is impressive, Brian. I mean, he just the one thing, and again, not to poop have a poo-poo on the whole thing or throw cold water on it, but I mean the guy does take four or five steps every time he goes to the basket.

SPEAKER_02

20% he does, but everybody else does too.

SPEAKER_01

I I but like last night, a couple of his move going basket, he catches the ball three-point line and takes off with one dribble. And I'm like, wait a minute. Like I rewound it twice when I got home last time. Like, those are travels, like, come on. Yeah, I know. But all that aside, um, he's he's fabulous. Awkward, like uh he's like a gazelle almost, the way he moves around the court. I mean, he hits that three from six, you know, 28 feet last night. Um, and just a smart basketball player, and just his ability to dunk from so far away, Brian. His his length is just he's unstoppable, man.

SPEAKER_02

Well, it's also, you know, we've seen I mean he's 7'4, which is insane. Height. Yeah. Now we've seen guys that tall before, and I'm not trying to like make them out to be freaks or anything, but we're used to seeing 7'4 guys few and far between. And we have it's it's been exactly. It's been the Sean Bradleys of the World, the Manute Bowls. Uh I'll I'll I'll go Swin Nader for the or you old school NBA fans, you love your you know, 10th guy on the bench. But it's always been like those guys who are really tall, but they they're kind of limited in what they do, but they they carved a rollout for themselves. This guy is tall. He does this, this, this, this, this, this. Excellent. Oh, and by the way, he's seven foot four. I mean, the three-point shot he nailed from about 35 feet last night.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I mean, the whole that just the whole building just sort of like, oh, really? In Oklahoma City. He's amazing. And yeah, I hear what you're saying because it's the same thing. Like, I'm not staying up until 10th grade to watch these games. So the finals, now the Western Conference finals are here. I think all the games start at 8:30 or earlier. Uh, now we'll watch because I'm old, now I'll watch all these games because I think it's gonna be a great series.

SPEAKER_01

Well, listen, I I thought Oklahoma City was gonna run through them. I think I told you last week I wouldn't be surprised if they won it five games. They still could. Do I think they're gonna win four in a row? Absolutely not. But man, like we got ourselves a series. Uh, Eastern Conference, the Knicks play tonight against the Cleveland Cavaliers, Brian. I'm excited for that. I mean, the only thing that worries me about the Knicks is, you know, I've seen this movie a million times. We saw it last year, too. Like, they have a long layoff. Um, I think they're a better team. I think they're better defensively. I don't think the Spurs, I don't think Cleveland plays a lick of defense. So if the Knicks are gonna score 120 points, they're gonna they're gonna win 120 to 109, 120 to 112, something like that. But, you know, I I think he's the most overrated player in the history of the NBA, James Harden. But I'm not gonna lie either. Is now his time to go out there and have, you know, four or five big games and get his team over the hump. I mean, Charles Barkley a month ago, Brian picked the Cavs to go to the go to the finals out of the East. He was on Mad Dog's show one afternoon on a and he picked, he thought he thought he and here we are. They're each each team four wins away. Brian, it's been 27 years since the Knicks made the NBA Finals.

SPEAKER_02

27 years, yeah. And I kind of want to put an ass-through spot, but that year was so weird, that 1999 lockout season. And the Knicks were at eighth seed. I mean, it wasn't like they were really expected to do that. And the Knicks, I mean, all the pressure's on the Knicks. And I I do think they should win this series. But I know what you're saying about Harden, and you know I'm with you in that camp. I'm not a Harden guy by any stretch. But he does have, he has an ability to have a game where he's absolutely awful, just terrible, and he crushes his team.

SPEAKER_01

Turns the ball over.

SPEAKER_02

He turns it all over all time. He can, though, still have, I don't think it's gonna be a few four or five games, but he can have maybe one at two, maybe most two games where he just goes off and he's the difference. Because if you've heard people say, well, you know, Jalen Brunson, Donovan Mitchell probably cancel each other out. Is there another guy who can just explode? Even Mobile? No, I don't think he's gonna be Evan Mobley. I mean, so Harden could be that guy, like how do how do the Knicks stop him? So I don't know who they have that's gonna guard him. I'm not gonna break this whole series down by. Uh I mean, uh he he could be at have a night where he's just unguardable. And that that you know, I think the first game as a Knicks fan, you've got to be worried about the first game after their history and after the fact they've had this long layoff. And Cleveland just won a tough set, not wasn't a tough game, they blew him out, wins the seventh game on the road, and it's a quick turnaround. Everything says takewalk game one for Knicks. Everything tells you that, and that's when you should be dangerous.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, if you're Cleveland and you've got house money right now, I mean that's a huge game seven win. Detroit, again, all season long, people are questioning whether or not they were a paper tiger. They should have lost to Orlando. They really should have, looking back at it. Uh now, Brian, you want you want the Knicks to win, you want San Antonio to win. The idea of putting Wemby at Madison Square Garden in the the NBA finals, uh, I mean, that's what you want as a basketball fan. For me, that's what I want. I don't know. I think that's the best matchup for to get the whole country involved. I think you'll do monster numbers if if that was the case.

SPEAKER_02

100%. I still think Oklahoma City's the best team for the champions. They're incredibly deep. And SGA, I don't just want a second um MVP. God bless him. He's a great player. I like watching him play, although, I mean, he's already got LeBron treatment. If you look at him cross-eyed, he ends up on the foul line. Um, but he doesn't have I'm sorry, he doesn't have maybe it's playing in Oklahoma City. He doesn't have the star power that Wemby does, and the very few people there's like really nobody in the league right now outside of LeBron and a couple other guys do. So I get what you're saying.

SPEAKER_01

It'll be fine. One thing the one thing I worry about, and I know SGA played 51 minutes last night, and he's just a the one thing that does worry me in this series is is Wembanyama. He played 49 minutes last night. Here's a guy who averaged 26, I think, during the regular season. Which was smart. Yep. Yep. So A, is he gonna wear out by the time we get to a game three, game four? You know, you're flying back and forth between San Antonio and Oklahoma City. It's a long playoffs. I mean, that's a lot of up and down for a guy who was seven foot four, Brian. So that does worry me a little bit. He took 25 field goals last night, 24 rebounds. So what is his energy level gonna be for a man that size? He looks to be well conditioned and obviously a great player, but that would be the one thing that would worry me down the road.

SPEAKER_02

He's already had injuries, Eric. He's a young guy, he's already had injuries. He was hurt this year, had injuries last year, missed a chunk of time. 100% I agree with you. And I I do, again, I like the supporting cast. Again, I think Dylan Harper's been a great rookie. We and I, we know Stefan Castle. It's been great to watch him mature into uh borderline NBA star, he's phenomenal. And he got I don't he had a good game last night. I know he had that layup at the end that didn't go his way, probably got fouled. But uh Wemby's got to carry this team, and that's kind of why you'd say like you got Oklahoma and the City's the favorite, because they're so deep and they are versatile, and you know, wasn't looking at their asses last night. They lost a close second two over second overtime game. And I don't like to pee in the parade here, but I do think it's gonna be Oklahoma City uh in the Knicks in a couple weeks. I'm not happy to be wrong because you're right. That'd be really Wimby in the Gaiden would be just a blast.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and the uh I mean the other thing too, with a lot of beef. Uh I I I did it, I mean, Mad Dog likes to scream about it, but you know, listen, the the game seven was on Amazon Prime the other night. Listen, I have Amazon Prime, I was home, so I did watch a little bit of it, and then I gotta be honest with you, I flipped off it and forgot about it. So I'm that whole streaming thing doesn't really bother me, to be honest with you. Um I think luckily, you know, the NBA finals will be on ABC, ESPN. You got NBC doing the Western Conference, the Eastern Conference Finals are on ESPN tonight, so no flipping uh to a streaming service. Uh so that'll keep us uh give us a little sanity, I should say, as we go forward here. So Nick's tonight, Brian, Madison Square Garden, eight o'clock, probably tipped the game about eight twelve. I'm excited for it. I'll make sure I got a front row of seat at work tonight. I'm I'm on the air tonight, so I'll be watching it. It'll be my it'll be my lead story at six of previewing it'll be my lead story tonight at 10 and 11. Uh been a long time between drinks, so I mean they made the finals last year, obviously, but this feels like a team that's got NBA finals written on it. So I'm looking forward to it.

SPEAKER_02

Uh I mean, right. They got here. So, and we've said this before. We got they got he got they got there this far last year. Um they gotta make that next step. And so again, I asked you the question I asked last week. I'm trolling here, I'll ask you two questions. If they screw this up, which they shouldn't, I think it's gonna I don't think I don't think it's gonna be a cakewalk. I think Nixon's six. Um if they don't pull this off, is there are there will there be bloodshed? Will there be train? Okay. Second thing, and I know it's hard, it's easy to say this because we just watched two teams that looked phenomenal last night, so it's this little recency bias. Is the Western Conference Finals the de facto finals?

SPEAKER_01

Well, they're the two best teams, obviously, by far. But listen, anything happened, you know, SGA, you mentioned Wemby with injuries, all it takes is one calf or one hamstring. You saw him. You saw Logi Ananobi with the Knicks. I mean, he's gonna be back tonight, as far as we know. Uh, it's all it takes, Brian. You gotta play the games. Anything can happen. You know, stranger things have happened in these series. So it is what it is. Well I'll I'll I uh just get me there and then we'll figure it out. That's all. Enjoy the ride. If you want to go there, by the way, and you're an average Joe like me and you, you're not getting in the building. Let's just be honest about that, too, by the way.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, don't Google the prices because they're uh they're record-setting prices for a conference final.

SPEAKER_01

And the NBA finals doesn't matter who they're playing. If the Knicks make the NBA finals, there was a spreadsheet I saw yesterday to sit in the worst seat, upper upper bowl of MSG. It was$2,800 a ticket.

SPEAKER_02

I'll watch on TV. I'll be just fine. So I'll watch I'll watch with Breed and the guys on TV. I'll be good.

SPEAKER_01

We're gonna take a time up. We come back. We got some subway series. Uh they played a golf major championship this weekend. Uh allegedly. I I flipped on a little bit on Sunday, but to be honest with you, I didn't care.

SPEAKER_02

Uh anyway. It wasn't the most exciting final. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, it was not.

SPEAKER_02

So majors.

SPEAKER_01

Uh we'll talk a little bit about that. NHL playoffs, I mentioned, an overtime game seven classic last night, all that more coming up on the Eating VC podcast.

SPEAKER_02

SPEAKER_01

Brian, a little bit of breaking news. It's not uh one of the mainstream sports, but Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from Wimbledon doing wrist injury. I mean, listen, he's he's a great player, he's fun to watch. He pulled out of the French Open back in April and now he's pulled out of Wimbledon, which is I want is it the first week of July, end of June? I forget what exactly that is.

SPEAKER_02

But it starts out of June and then usually finishes up first or second week of July. Um that is a huge deal. I mean, he's been in the last three finals, one the first one in 20. I'm trying to do the math here, Eric, but uh with 23, 24, he won, and then lost last year to Skinner uh from Italy in the finals. So that is a big deal. So takes a little luster off Wimbledon.

SPEAKER_01

One other thing I gotta mention before, and it's we'll mention this in the pop culture segment. One of our favorite movies of all time turns 49 today, Brian. Did this slip past your radar?

SPEAKER_02

Uh let me see, 1976. It wasn't all the presents, and then that came out in March when we forgot to mention it. Oh, 49, so that'd be 1977. Uh listen, the easy answer would be uh Star Wars, but if you're talking about our favorite movie, a little movie that we both appreciate. It's it's probably a little movie called Smoky and the Bandit.

SPEAKER_01

You are correct.

SPEAKER_02

If we're still doing this podcast a year from now, God willing, uh, we're gonna do you know me as the producer. Please go. I'm gonna have a whole I'm gonna hold a whole fitty thing going on, a whole 50th anniversary for Smokey. But good call by you. Bad job by me, good call by you.

SPEAKER_01

We'll have a Diablo sandwich and Dr. Peppers all around.

SPEAKER_02

And I'll be in a goddamn hurry, so yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Uh Brian, so let me add, I got a question for you. We'll talk a little baseball here. Did you watch the Mets come back? Was my text telling you that the Mets were gonna come back, get you back to the TV? Because you told me you were turning it off when it was 6-2.

SPEAKER_02

Or 6-3. I had 6-3. No, it was 5-2. No, it was 5-1. I remember it was 5-1 Yankees, and I said I'm turning this off. I know I said time to go watch golf, which was as we'll get into it a little briefly. It was not the most exciting major evolution in the world. Uh, and then I I had to go run an air and pick up a kid, a kid. So I did, and I had the TV and I had the screw, so I had it on the radio. It was 6-3. I don't know. I was like, oh, six to three, okay, whatever. So I listened to it on the radio. I was out again, had to make a kid run late Sunday afternoon. I don't remember which kid or what the hell they were doing. Had to go get them, though. And uh I heard them uh tie it up, and then I came home and watched uh watched the tenth inning.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, I told you before the game I was annoyed before the game even started because the Yankees ended up the day before, which I hadn't seen because I had a billion things going on. I had prom and all this other stuff, that the Yankees had pushed back Ryan Weathers to Monday and were calling up a rookie to make the start. And this is we've talked about this before, Brian, with with baseball, like when Aaron Judge or Shohei Otani sat down one day. Remember it was the Angels kicked.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I remember, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And one of them had the day off. I don't know if it was Otani or Judge. And the two of us were like, you know, if you're a kid, you're buying tickets for these games. Like, just use your noodle once in a while. And that was another case where the Yankees, to me, came across as pompous asses because, hey, you know what? We won the game Friday night, you know, blah, blah, blah, no blood either way. We're gonna throw a rookie for his second major, the third major league start against the Mets in the Subway series. And it pissed me off. They are pompous asses. Yes, they are. It pissed me off because there was no reason for it. And to because the kid was on his regular throw day on Triple A Sprint, that's why they started him. I mean, give me a break. Your best chance he pitched fine, four and a third innings. That's not why they lost.

SPEAKER_02

He doesn't have any, he he wasn't the reason they lost.

SPEAKER_01

No, no, no. But but the idea I went into the game and I texted you before, why should I care about this when the Yankees clearly don't? That was my point. That's what I was saying. Um, and then the it's funny. I texted you because as soon as Bednar gave up the two hits, I said, the Yankees are losing this game. And I had an intern working with me that day who's a Mets fan. Oh, what are you talking about? Yeah, Soto coming up, and then he strikes out Vientos, and I still was like, I just was not feeling good about it. And then Bednar, and good thing for the Mets hitting coach, Mets hitting coach, I don't know who he is, told Taylor Taylor, uh, what's him called there? Tyrone Taylor. He said, Look, first pitch breaking ball for Bednar. He has a habit of throwing a first pitch, get me over curveball to start a count when you're sitting on a fastball. He throws it, he hits it a mile, tie game, 6-3. Yankees lose the next thing. So uh the clear annoyance. But it was funny too, because then the first thing you get is the gritty gutty New York, Matt. So that's nothing to do with gritty gutty. You had a pitcher who coughed up the fucking game. That's it. You know what I mean? Like it was like, don't give me gritty gutty. You had a pitcher who made a terrible decision. That's it. That's it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and but that's I mean, again, that's I mean, you don't expect Tyrone Taylor to make that play. You're not you're not scared if you're a Yankee fan, or you're not optimistic when it's Tyrone Taylor two outs two on. I mean, you're hoping for a miracle because Taylor's just uh he's a weak hit, he's a weak hitter, but he does have some pop, and you're right. I I heard the same thing. He wait wait get be ready for a first pit first pitch breaking ball, and he hung it like you know, he hung it over the moon. Close line. Taylor took advantage. Yeah, and close line, thank you.

SPEAKER_01

And the other thing too is the idea that, and again, you and I have talked about this with Dickie Lovelady. Last night, the Yankees, this is the again, these are two$300 and something million dollar team payrolls. Again, I let you crow about your mats, but I just the frustration, you've gone through it as well. The idea that I have Paul, what's his name, who was what's his name, and the bullpen punching it. Blackburn coming in in the seventh inning last night of a of a game that you need to win. And he's who you're going to in the seventh inning with a couple runners on base and nobody out.

SPEAKER_02

Paul Blackburn. Well, it's the same thing. I mean, there's not enough pitchers to go around, obviously. You know, we saw Sean Minai, who looks just terrible for the Mets. Ever since you gave him that pizza advice, he's been awful. It's your fault. Well, no, what is he? But like, what are you gonna do? Like, who are you bringing? Who would you who did you same thing when somebody goes, why do they bring him a nine in here? So I'll throw it to the Yankees. Who did you want them to go to?

SPEAKER_01

Nobody else. Anybody. It drives me crazy. And drive it that move should have driven you nuts. It drove me nuts because I said to myself, what are they doing bringing Manai in? And again, it wasn't his fault. There's a couple mistakes happened behind him, whatever. But I it's just it's so frustrating that those are the best options you we you have and I have as fans of these teams. Those are the best options in games you need to win.

SPEAKER_02

It doesn't no, I agree with you 100%. I don't know what the easy fix is because you just can't go out there and say I want to make a trade, I don't want to sign the guy. Um you know me. I mean I'm I'm I still I know it's been uh 40 something years since Dennis Eckersley started all this. I still hate the I still don't really like the closer roll. Some somebody's like, if the seventh thing tight game, go beat your best relief pitcher. If your best relief pitcher usually pitches the ninth, go get him. I know that's never gonna happen. Those days are gone forever. But uh you get a better chance of bringing the spitball back. Now, occasionally you see it, but you're not seeing it that often in a May game. And listen.

SPEAKER_01

Well, my problem with the Yankees is they knew the bullpen wasn't good going into the season, and they could have made a couple more moves, but they're gonna they were gonna ride it out, see what happens to the trade deadline. Oh, we're gonna fix Camilo Duvall, we're gonna fix so-and-so. And like you joke about Tim Hill, looks like a guy who sold your father a Buick in 1978. That's uh, you know, that or you know, that's he that that's what it is, you know what I mean? So he's actually pretty good, though. I know he had rough games, it wasn't really his fault the tenth inning of the day, but he's pretty good. Yeah, and it's so funny, Volpe runs into the second baseman, which and Volpe's been great since he came back. They said he made an adjustment on a swing, no uppercut. Now he's trying to hit line drives. He was great last night, too. But the idea that he goes and runs into the second baseman with a clear beat on the ball, like that was. are just the little mental things where you're like, are you are you kidding me with this? Are you kidding me with this? Really? Both teams were sloppy on Sunday. Like sloppy sloppy. And you were you wanted to you wanted to hang Dante uh Daubichette for trying after he dropped that pop-up. Oh my God. Jesus God.

SPEAKER_02

Had a good game last night. Had a good game last night, but he's been awful. So and I really thought they were so sloppy on Sunday. I thought that even though Stearns has said you know he's not going anywhere, I thought if they had lost that game Sunday, which they should have, that it was a chance that if they don't they could that Mendoza could have been gone. Like if they had lost Sunday and then lose two or three in Washington and then go to Miami which has been a house of horrors for them for the last decade he the the the it might the call might have come from above you know Stern's office that we got to make a change.

SPEAKER_01

But so far it's working of the year biggest win of the year 100% you need one of those you won six to seven now you're what five six games under 500 that's manageable. You just can't have another losing you can't the Mets just gotta just gotta try to keep the momentum going. You can't go have a four-game losing streak or something like that. You just gotta you know you play 500 right now for a little while to kind of do things. Go ahead what are you going to say?

SPEAKER_02

It would be nice if they were in the American League where there's like four good teams and all the other teams are under 500 as opposed to the National League where there's like nine like legit well over 500 looking good teams. I mean the American League sucks and the National League is kind of secretly kind of loaded. It's just it's not just the Dodgers and the Cubs I mean the Padres the freaking Cardinals are over 500 the pirates that's that's the problem and it's cyclical. But the problem is when you're five games under 500 in the end of May Eric you've got a lot of crap to climb over just to get into wild card contention again.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah but you know it's cyclical you know these leagues just like the AFC and NFC for years in football it flips it goes back and forth. The other thing too is you got you know you have big market teams in the National League too that spend and you do in the American League as well but it's just interesting to see what's going to happen going forward here.

SPEAKER_02

And did you see last night Brian that's changed subject the Angels had a no hitter going into the uh night the A's had a no hitter or whatever going into the ninth inning last night and then they coughed it up what are the details on that did you see that I didn't see the details because it was late and I was already half asleep from watching the double overtime game I just saw that uh the A's had a JT Ginn of course I have to former Met JT Ginn former Met draft pick of course has a no-hitter going I'm surprised he didn't preach a damn perfect game I didn't see how it ended I just saw that he lost it in the eighth or ninth inning ninth inning he has a one nothing lead in the ninth inning on a no-hitter sick he he uh Adam Frazier gets a line drive single in the bottom of the ninth Zach Nito is he a former Met NATO Zach Nito I'm thinking of Tom fouled with a two run homer the Angels win two to one southern one nothing in the ninth and no hitter two batters later game over goodnight see you later that's rough one so happens yeah uh we mentioned the PGA briefly Brian I again I just had no I mean when the when the winner of the tournament is in the clubhouse for 45 minutes before it's and you still got golfers on the course that's not the way you want to end things you want that final group to be you know walking up trying to get their way uh to a to a major championship I just don't the PGA championships the four it's you'd say the fourth of the four you know what I mean it's just there's the Masters there's the open US Open the PGA championship is kind of like a eh you know well here's the thing and I was thinking about that too because you're talking about this course outside of Philly which I knew nothing about here's where I think like we mentioned tennis earlier and here's what's the cool thing about the tennis majors you mean I'm not a huge tennis fan and I'm not I'm not as huge a tennis fan as I was like 20 30 years ago and watched a lot more but like you know the open sites like uh like okay you've got Augusta and that's the same thing as Wimbledon I know Wimbledon you know uh Roland Garros has a ton of history and it's unique because the clay court um and you know well we got the U.S. Open right down the road in Queens and flushing I and you know uh half the time the the U.S. Open usually has a call course that we've at least heard of or it's like a famous course. I don't know the least squad about this friggin' course outside of in friggin' Bucks County or wherever the hell it was so it's kind of like I I don't know we're I don't I think it takes a there's no yeah there's no juice to it. You know they don't go play like Pebble Beach where I can look there and just just envy the fact that people get to live in a that there's a place in the country where you can live like that. That's kind of cool to watch. But I don't know anymore I don't care about Philly fans they're all you know they're yelling at the guy from Great Britain because the British the English the English guy because Rory Rory the yellow and because Philly fans are obsessed with the Dallas Cowboys they're yelling uh the Dallas Cowboys suck at Scotty Shefford is from Dallas I mean give me a break come on guys you gotta you get it and rent free rent free so yeah it didn't and then good for the guy who won I love the joke I I thought it was really odd and once I noticed it I couldn't stop watching he's wearing two gloves two black gloves and never see a golfer wear two gloves like most you know you wear it on your you wear it on your um foundation hand yeah and somebody does the thing like this is the first guy serious golfer since Denon's Young Caddy Shack to wear two black gloves and I love it.

SPEAKER_01

That's classic I never thought of it I wish I had but I had to so I had to shout out somebody who thought of that I was like I turned it on yesterday afternoon after the uh after I edited the highlights for the Yankees and the Mets and I'm like I flip over to it and I'm like I didn't run highlights at six o'clock it wasn't over A and B. I didn't care about it. I mean there was no reason to show highlights who cares it's a mention it's a mention you know uh other thing NHL last night I don't know if you caught a little bit of Buffalo Montreal uh yeah great great series man uh Montreal jumped out to a 2-0 lead I caught it in the third period of 13 minutes ago tied up then what Paige Thompson from Connecticut had a great chance to win in overtime on a two-on-one break did couldn't score uh that's gonna haunt him for a long time that was a chance to go to the Eastern Conference finals. I love Marty St. Louis Brian I think I told you before he's one of the nicest guys in hockey lives in Stanford uh does a lot of charity work for uh the the Shoulder Chetch Foundation which is about mental health awareness he's there every year he'll be there again this year on July 30th when they have their fourth annual event uh so I have a soft spot for him and we'll see what happens now going forward Brian we got Montreal Carolina I mean most people think Carolina will win that in a walk Carolina hasn't played a game since May 9th Brian it's unbelievable I I heard that yesterday too and I was like well first of all I do like who's in the who's in the Eastern Conference finals oh yeah Carolina that swept the Flyers like a month ago yeah but I'm with you with Martin St.

SPEAKER_02

Louis he wasn't a ranger for too long but I I loved movie for him when he was yeah uh now he's the coach with Montreal that's great 100% with what you were saying was a great game last night the overtime goal is like wasn't the hardest goal in the world it's probably gonna hurt that Buffalo goal is he's gonna that's gonna hunt him because it was a bit of a soft goal. Here's the thing though Eric and I said this before I saw this is bad luck by Buffalo and then we'll get off this but I'm telling you folks this stuff matters. The regular young lady who usually um sings the national anthem before Sabres playoff games got swapped out for some other guy. I guess maybe the owner knew or something but the they're owned by the Pagulas who also owned by the things like that. You don't mess with I mean listen if you listen I'm not gonna go into the whole who this guy is if you know who you know you're a Ranger fan but if there's a game seven at the garden with the Rangers and somebody other than John Bransley walks out there, they'll tear the building down to the ground. Don't screw with that stuff. It matters especially in hockey.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah I agree. That's my rant uh yeah there's a bit of a story on it they were bringing back a fan favorite to sing the anthem Buffalo Saber Doug Allen will be at the state of tonight's game.

SPEAKER_02

SPEAKER_01

Brian's first list of birthdays was Reggie Jackson Mr. October and uh one of my first childhood heroes Brian was Reggie Jackson if you're a Yankee fan that knows home runs. I was a little young for that but still the Reggie bar and all that stuff. I mean everyone knew who Reggie Jackson was my first game he had a home run at he had a home run Greg Nettles hit a home run. I had a chance to meet him several years ago and the one thing that stood out to me Brian was he was a larger than life figure. But you know he's 80 now but this was probably three four years ago and he stood next to me and he was small not a big man. Obviously you know back in the day he's lifted weights yeah he was a great football player at Arizona State but he was it struck me he seemed like he was only about five eight five nine you know and you shrink when you get a little older obviously but I just I was like here was this Lords of the life figure and I was standing next to him I felt like I was overwhelming him compared to how he was but had a great chance to talk to him and I I didn't ask for an orograph obviously or anything like that but just the idea that had to get with him? Did not did not didn't feel comfortable asking him because he was nice enough just to shoot the breeze with us as we were waiting on the field for something and uh anyway Mr.

SPEAKER_02

October happy birthday again uh I I I if I haven't told this story before we mentioned Reggie and or his birthday in the past years it's a great piece of baseball lore 1966 one of the first amateur baseball drafts is held the Europe Mets have the second I mean have the first pitch in it have the first pick they take a catcher named Steve Chilkut who never made the majors Kansas City uh has the second pick in the draft they take the ball player from Arizona State named Reginald Martinez Jackson and the rest is history. Nice job by the Mets.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah and the the reasons why the Mets didn't take it we don't have to get into the reasons yeah there's some there's some rumors to say yeah yeah the other thing real quick is Reggie forgot his credential to a game uh to get in the clubhouse a couple years ago it's a great story and the uh the guy working the Yankee Clubhouse door hat didn't know who he was oh so he says to him he says to him uh I give up can I can I have your name please I want to see if you're on the list Reggie leans over and goes M-R O C T O B E R That's awesome that's a great story that I love and you can see him doing it too you can totally just see him doing it and then and if someone came someone was with an earshot there is like hey that's Reggie Jackson could you let him in please 49 years ago this fall Mr.

SPEAKER_02

October was wow all right go ahead what else you got Brian all right I got a couple more here we've been a couple weeks off on the birthday we're gonna keep in the sports thing here we mentioned golf this guy we love this guy hello friends uh hello Jim Bance it's your birthday this week birthday today actually Jim Nancy now I think it's her say legendary announcer uh for CBS for all these years uh and this week was uh this week in 1988 or this week in 1988 he debuted with CBS something like that so maybe that's a clue there is Jim turning 67 70 or 72 I believe 72 I'm gonna believe Brian you are the wrong end of the spectrum he's 67. Wow I thought he was the other way all right what else he was young when he started uh doing this gig he's looking you know like the I and like the Ian Eagle those guys he started out young all right we're gonna go to another world of uh pugilists here uh one of the most celebrated boxers of all time an Olympic hero and uh you know former he former champion world champion sugar ray leonard sugar ray leonard won the gold medal in Montreal this is how it goes I'm doing a hand myself that's what that was good yeah thank you all right so uh sugar ray sixty three sixty seven or seventy I honestly have no idea I'm gonna say sixty seven he is seventy all right oh for two go ahead where are you on sugar? Were you a fan or not?

SPEAKER_01

Not a I was a Hagler guy and I need to 100% I thought he danced his way through a victory past Hagler. I didn't think Hagler had the correct strategy necessarily in that fight but I thought Hagler got robbed in that fight so anyway.

SPEAKER_02

Alright yeah we'll move on because I can't even argue with you I agreed rather than he said. Alright uh next one we're moving to the world of TV or comedy Tina Faye great actress and comedic actress SNL and then that 30 rock show back in the day. Tina Faye she turned in 50 a little close 55 55 56 61 5 56 over three Brian that's what's a little older than that you got one more hero and I thought you might have seen this one on I know you like I know you like like me you like the rock and roll Eric I thought maybe you've seen you saw this one uh because he had a break in yesterday yesterday Pete Townsend uh the great uh Pete Townsend the great artist great guitar player and singer great songwriter uh from phenomenal songwriter from the Who uh half the band's already left us but Pete is still rocking Eric is he rocking at 76 81 or 85 boom you salvaged one you salvaged one I have his biography sitting downstairs on the a bookcase near our television I have not had a chance to crack it yet but I am looking forward to uh to reading the Pete Townsend biography that you know it's got some great stories to tell and there was some circulating stuff.

SPEAKER_01

I don't know if there was anniversary of was it Keith Moon's birthday maybe recently or something but a lot of Keith Moon stuff was on the uh internet. So you go down those rat holes Brian it's it's tricky when you go to that stuff. So anyway. All right well listen you got your two out of three against the Yankees so I know you're happy about that. You got some uh NBA stuff coming up with the Knicks tonight so we'll have lots to talk about uh we just got to tell Mike Carl when we want to talk to him he's good to go whenever we're ready so we'll try to talk to him this week maybe we'll wait till the Knicks series gets going a little bit uh Mike can talk about that as well he'll be writing a bunch of comments he'll be at the game tonight obviously and Thursday so maybe we'll try to catch him on the back part of the week I'll ask him what his schedule looks like so we'll figure out that new book coming out on the Yankees yup yeah good time with him talking about Steinberg and also talking about the Knicks so good stuff ahead here on the EDBC podcast. All right that's it for us Brian I'm Eric Keys Brian until next time Brian take it back see you
