The ED/BC Podcast. You think you hate it now, but wait until you listen to it.

SPEAKER_00

Welcome back to another edition of the EDBC podcast. And Brian, I um didn't think I'd see this day, but the New York Knicks are playing in the NBA finals for the first time in 27 years. 27 years. I heard that, yeah. Half my life for crying out loud almost. Think about that. It's awful. I understand. I mean, as a cow, as a cowboy fan and as a Mets fan, you understand the pain of, you know, you're gonna celebrate 40 years of the Mets this year. The Cowboys are what, 95? Is that 95?

SPEAKER_01

95. Hey, at least they the Mets got to a couple pennants, you know, uh a few times, a couple World Series a few times. So they at least got to the precipice of where the the uh the Knicks are sitting. So I've been waiting for Dallas to even get that. But this isn't about Dallas. I'll let you, you guys at 27 years, I usually as the folks, I mean Eric's the Eric's the talent, as they say he's the handsome face. All right. I'm the guy, but I'm the producer, I'm the co-vost, I'm the backseat guy on air, but we're usually making the decisions off the air. No, not today. I put down the rundown, but that's just a guide. If Eric wants to take the whole time to just embrace what so many Knicks fans are feelings, Eric, I turned the floor to you. You've already said it, it's a big deal. And certainly you have to feel good about the way they've gotten there. No slip-ups, no stupid losses of home that you gotta then try and go and win a game on the road because you're effed up in the garden. None of that. Domination pretty much from the start.

SPEAKER_00

You know, Brian, it's funny. Uh, we've talked about this on the podcast a lot over the last couple years, how as we've gotten older, our fandom has changed. I think bad losses keep you up more than they keep me up. Like, I don't my world still revolves around sports. Obviously, it's how I make a living. But my fandom in say 1994 and 1999 was a lot different. I mean, you know, after a bad loss, you you know what you know what it's like when your team has a bad loss, you go to bed, you're pissed off, you're you know, you're tossing and turning. Like, right. I don't have that anymore. But uh too many other things in my life, you know, family, yeah, all that stuff. I that's going on the back burner, but man, this has been a a fun run. It's kind of revived my Knicks enthusiasm because the first thing I thought about was, man, it's been all the stuff on social media, and this is when social media is great too, when you you know you see all the point guards the Knicks have had over the last 27 years. Right. You know, the different the Isaiah Thomas regime, you know, the Stephon Marbury, Tim Thomas teams. Like I wasn't a fan of Carmelo Anthony. I know Knicks fans love him. I was not a Carmelo fan. I I just thought he was a very well days. Yeah. Letrell Spearwell, you know, got to the finals in '99. So it's revived my enthusiasm. I think on Twitter this morning someone posted the intros to the 1994 uh finals where they introduced the the Knicks team, you know, with the, you know. So it's revived my fandom in the Knicks. You know, and uh it's true, Brian. If you're a New York sports fan, when the Knicks are really, really good, they take over the town.

SPEAKER_01

They're taking over the town in a huge way. I mean, you can't really you turn on the news here and you know they're hearing about the cops saying, you know, these watch parties, they gotta they can't have these watch parties just people getting too out of control. I saw this morning a whole bunch of scenes from various uh bars and drinking establishments around the greater New York City area that were enjoying the game last night. And you know, again, it New York, we've said this before, and I'm not a native New Yorker. I'm from up the road a bit, but uh I've lived here in this tri-state area for 22 years. And again, uh New York is a basketball town. Basketball's hot. It just is because it's different. I grew up outside of Boston, and it's a little different because Boston's got like there's no divide. It's the Sox, it's the Bruins, it's the Celtics. Here in New York, it's different. You got the Yankees, Mets, I think, is fake safe to say, is pretty much split down the middle. Giants Jets are pretty, maybe not even more towards the Giants, but what I'm saying is the Knicks unite all those factors, all those sports fans, everyone. So except for the three Nets fans. So yeah, it's exciting. And uh little time, and you do have some time off now. And like someone said today, and I read it like that's true, and I've I've been this way before when you have like these seven-game series. Now you get to like not have pressure filled nights for a week or so. Let the other guys on the other side of the on the on the other bracket fight it out. You guys just chill and and enjoy this for a couple for you know for about a week.

SPEAKER_00

Funny too, is like you even when your team is playing like the Knicks are playing right now, like there's still some anxiety, you know, hoping they don't blow it. You know, you hear that oh, they're up three games to none. Like, listen, as a Yankee fan, when the Yankees are up three games to none against the Red Sox, there's no way you thought the Red Sox were gonna come back and win that series. And you thought the same way with Cleveland, but still there's some moments where you're like, even last night when the Knicks were up 29, and then all of a sudden it's 19 at the half, and I'm like, oh boy. I mean, you knew the Knicks weren't gonna lose, but at the same time, like the Knicks came back from 22 down with seven minutes ago, and the NBA is that's a regular occurrence of teams down 20 coming back because of the three-point shot and the shot clock.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, yeah, you know, it never used to be that way. That's a good point, but now it's much more common than it used to be. Much more common. And you're right, just the way teams play, teams don't, you know, used to be teams with that kind of lead would put the hammer down, lock down on defense, and just try and milk the clock for offense and get easy shots, but they still fire bombs away.

SPEAKER_00

So And both my kids, you know, just not talking about the Knicks, both my my son grew up a Celtics fan. I mean, the Knicks were terrible. I told I've said this before too. I told my son, you're a Yankee fan, then you pick what other sports you can be a fan of any team you want, but a father and son cannot root for opposite teams. So we're both Yankee fans, but he roots for the Patriots. And like just the last couple weeks, over the last couple years, he's enjoyed watching the Knicks with me. And he kind of said to me, He's like, I kind of like the Knicks. I'm like, whoa, whoa, whoa, you've been a Celtic fan your whole life. You're 16 years old, and now you're telling me you're a Knicks fan. You can't change like that, but he's enjoyed the experience of watching the games with me. And like we went we went last year to the city in May to watch the Knicks and Celtics at the garden. We didn't go to the garden, but we were in the city. We went to a restaurant. I told you this. And they want both my kids want to do it again. They want to go to the city during the finals, June 8th or June 10th, game three and four in New York, and they're like, Can we go to the city that day and just kind of be part of it? And that's cool, man. That that's why sports are great.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, you know, it's interesting you say that because you brought up a little memory. I, you know, last night was a little tough for me because, and that's why Eric, I say to you, and anybody else who's going through what Eric's doing with the kid, just savor this, savor that because it's one of the cool things about sports. And uh, my dad was a big NBA fan, um, especially like in the 70s, 80s, and 90s. Not so much the last few years of his life, but although he did call me up like when the Suns made the finals and he said, Do you think they can win this? And yada yada yada. But he was not like he didn't have like a huge devotion to a team when we lived outside of Boston and we went to Salvic's dance a lot. He liked those teams. But my old man loved because he was going to he was working in the city and going to night school at the time in New York City in 1970. Young guy, you know, working and going to school at night. Loved the 1970 Knicks. And last night loved them. Like if I look, you know, just thought like those guys were gods. And I last night I would have called him and said, you know, this team, what do you think of this Knicks team? And he would have loved them. So again, just loved the way they played. I thought, because Eric nicely texted me and said, they this is a great basketball team. They play such unselfish basketball. And I said, Yep, that's what makes it beautiful. So those are cool memories to have. And um, like I said, no parade just yet. And New York doesn't celebrate parades. We're just getting there. And I'm like, so we've gotten there, but uh there's still work to be done, but you a little, you got a little all time, a little time to enjoy before the next party.

SPEAKER_00

So the other thing, two things, man, like I give Carl Anthony Towns a lot of credit, Brian. I did not like his game when he first got to the Knicks. I I just didn't think it was going to translate, but give Mike Brown credit too. And even after the game last night, Carl Anthony Towns said the similar same thing. We're no one's drinking beers, we're not popping champagne, we got a lot of work to do. Like, this is just part of the process. I hated that the Knicks fired uh Tom Thibodeau last year. That was the owner, James Dolan, wanting to do something because maybe a couple players told him he he wrote him too hard or whatever. But hey, listen, it worked out. Mike Brown's been great. I like the idea that he had the players sign like an accountability contract. You heard about that again last night. And he did it, he did it before on other teams, but they're they're just playing well. They bought in, man. And he's playing his bench. I mean, the Knicks' bench has been great, but watching them play the last couple weeks, Brian, has just been so much fun. So unselfish. No looking for the open man, like the fast breakpoints they've had, like just it's all coming together. And and listen, I don't know who's gonna win the West, but obviously the Knicks will be big underdogs, but man, I think they got a chance. And if you got a chance, that's all you want. That's all you want.

SPEAKER_01

Well, that's the thing to sort of sort of uh reign on the parade just a little bit here. Um listen, my team a couple years ago won the NBA title by they didn't go through a huge gauntlet. They got, you know, the skit things worked out and they didn't face a super team. And the Knicks right now are are riding high. They've they that all these teams were less than they were, and they didn't fart. That's the thing. You played teams that weren't really, really on your level right now, and you didn't fart around. Here's the part thing that's next. They're going up and they're jumping up to a they're about to jump up a massive level in skill. A massive level. Because again, I I think these two teams out west, um, I you know, I said okay, Steven winning five, but it could be a fun five of them, but but I'm I was wrong. These two teams are great, and uh I and if you're a basketball fan of Nick Finn, hey, basketball fan on you, enjoy these next few games. Hope it goes seven, because the Western Conference final series final has been lots of fun for for basketball fans. I hope it goes seven so they wear whoever the hell wins wears themselves out.

SPEAKER_00

Don't have a lot of miles on their bodies right now, Brian. They've they've kind of coasted, they've had good rest. They had a good rest between the last series and then, you know, last minute, the starters. I don't think I think they took them out. What about six, seven minutes to go in the game last night and did wholesale changes? So you let these teams just beat the hell out of each other for the next week, and then next Wednesday, if you're the Knicks, go steal game one on the road. One of those teams is gonna be, you know, like I said, you know, exhausted from whatever, a couple injuries. You go steal game one, then all of a sudden you're like, whoa, wait a minute here. You never know. So that's all we want is a chance, Brian. That's all we want.

SPEAKER_01

It reminds me, I'm being an old guy here. I'm being an old guy, Eric, but I can't help it. I'm old now. That's being an 80s NBA basketball, just the basketball in general, just nut when I was a kid in the 80s. Kind of reminds me, you know, watching the Celtics and the uh the Sixers and the Celtics and the Pistons, like beat the living, or you know, whoever, the six whomever in the East beat the living crap out of each other. While the Lakers were like cruising, beating like uh, you know, the Spurs and the San Antonio and the Phoenix Suns by like four games to one or something. Like the Lakers would be like a it'd be the LA Invitational out West while the East was beating themselves bloody. So I hope the uh keep the edge, I'd say of the Knicks. Keep the edge, take the get some time off, but hopefully they can stay sharp.

SPEAKER_00

Uh listen, uh I've watched I haven't watched all the games in the Western Conference. Uh I'm not gonna lie. I've I've caught bits and pieces here and there just based on schedules at a wedding the other night, so I didn't get to see it. But uh Wembin Yama, like I told you in the last podcast we did, he is fun to watch. SGA is fun to watch. Uh who do you want to play if you're the Knicks, Brian? I think I I think you'd rather play San Antonio. I don't know if you agree with that or not, but um I think both teams are just super talented and they're gonna be a huge challenge no matter who they play.

SPEAKER_01

I think you're I kind of even though Wemby's incredible, I kind of agree with you that if I have to pick, I gotta pick San Antonio. Because I just think OKC, and I know they have some injuries with Jalen Williams with his hamstring and who knows, but even without him, they're so deep and they're just big, Eric. They're a bigger team. And everybody we already know this from last year. They were very scored last year. Defensive one, they just everybody plays great defense. They're just a bit they must pardon the language, they gotta be just a bitch to play. So uh, but I like I said, 27 years, it's been 53 years. Sorry, folks, since the last time you actually done the deed and had the parade, so don't be beggars, not better, not beggars, but you can't choose. Yeah, you're ready to take on anybody. You should be, you should be. Feel confident.

SPEAKER_00

And the last thing before we take a break is I've really enjoyed the fact that the the current Knicks team has embraced the past Knicks teams. You mentioned we mentioned, you know, that legends lounge behind the the basket. You got Steph Marbury, who, you know, is he a Knicks legend? Uh probably not. But you know, you got Clyde Frazier and uh Patrick Ewing and Bill Bradley's been in the building a little bit, and you mentioned Latrell Sprewell, uh Larry Johnson, John Starks. Those are, you know, Charles Oakley was at the game last night because it was in Cleveland. I don't think he's allowed in the building in MSG.

SPEAKER_01

No, that's a whole other thing. We don't get into that. See, we're gonna keep the vibes positive. But aren't Bernard King being uh uh mistaken for Cedric the Entertainer the other night?

SPEAKER_00

Uh did we talk about no? Someone else was. We didn't, we didn't talk about that.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god, Bernard King. Now that's just now that's a Nick legend. Get that one right.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, I mean, the idea that somebody on CBS Sports called him Cedric the Entertainer, oh my God, just buffoonery. Buffoonery. So anyway. All right. Well, speaking of buffoonery, we're gonna take a time out. We'll come back and talk about the Mets. Yeah, there you go. Nice segment. That's a good thing. All right, we're right back. Go ahead, Brian. Take it away.

So this summer, show from home, save with Instakirk.

SPEAKER_00

Alright, so with the first segment, I talked about my Knicks. Uh, I'll let you talk about your Mets a little bit. The Yankees had a couple of good wins, but you know, first thing I'm gonna say about the Mets, Brian, is you listen, they're they're they're they're just killed by injuries. I mean, there's they're missing half their team. Listen, they didn't play well for a long stretch. I get that. But man, they're just what are you gonna say? The team is missing half the team. Lindor's out. Now Soto's been out a couple games and uh cramps or whatever he's got, stomach aches, something like that.

SPEAKER_01

Well, he's got a there's a virus, I guess the beat writer said he's been going through the uh make your joke here about virus going through the Mets Clubhouse, make an insert insert joke here. So I don't know if you're gonna be.

SPEAKER_00

And you were talking about firing the manager, but again, what's that gonna do? You're missing half the team.

SPEAKER_01

Well, you see, that's where that's kind of a beat. I don't like that excuse. Here's why you lose for link you lose Francisco Lindor for at least two months. It looks like it's gonna be at least two months. That's a crusher. And you lose you lost Soto for about six weeks. That that's a crusher. Soto's bad. Okay, Clay Holmes sucks. Uh, I mean, not Clay Holmes, the injury sucks. But like I I still I that I mean Polanco los robber, who sucks. I'm gonna be I'm I'm supposed to cry because they're not gonna play for a while. They were bad additions. They were they weren't doing anything anyway. And the guys who are there, again, I hate to do this because I'm sure he's a nice guy. Maybe he's this isn't it's easy to say when you're not an athlete, but Bo Bish the Bo Bachet signing is looking like Ed Whitson position player. I mean, this guy looks like he is gonna poop his pants every time he gets up to bat. I mean, come on. He does not look like he's ready for the big lights. And that's the thing, dude. You're Bo, calm down. Okay, relax. Just play ball, because I got news for you. You're about to play a whole summer in a ball at home with home games where it's gonna be mostly empty. So don't worry about the pressure. Just chill and play ball.

SPEAKER_00

And the one thing last week he had a he had a good little streak last week where he hit a couple home runs. Yeah, he did. But on the SNY broadcast, Gary's pretty buttoned up and pretty smart with details. You can if he hits a couple home runs in a row, Gary, you do got to mention he hit one off a position player the night before. I mean, that's yeah, like a hanging knuckleball or whatever it was. You hit a 38 mile an hour knuckleball 400 feet. Don't come in the next day, oh two at bats, he's got two home runs. You gotta have a little asterisk next to that, Gary, and say, by the way, last night's was against a position player. Like let's take a little bit. I mean, they scored they scored 16 runs in that game, and the last nine of them were against a position player.

SPEAKER_01

So let's relax a little bit. It's a good point. And they did lose their catcher who, even though he hasn't he hadn't been playing great when you it's like anything else, you know if it's the Yankees. There's not catchers are like left tackles in football. There's not enough decent starting catchers to go around. So when you lose your starter, then pretty soon, before you know it, once or twice a week, you're putting a you're putting a triple A player back there catching in that bat. That's what the Mets are doing right now. And they have had a lot of injuries, but that doesn't excuse just the putrid, lifeless baseball they play. Yeah. Um and I'm really to the point of just I won't believe me, but I'm really to the point of indifference because I just this is just terrible. And at this point, you just hope that when your team's this bad, you gotta hope that you know this from being a Jets fan. When your team's this bad, you gotta hope, and I'm sorry I said the thing about Boba shit that wasn't really nice. I don't even want to see people get fired, but you gotta hope that this just this just means massive changes are coming. You gotta hope the people in charge at the very top are ape duty and are gonna make some changes.

SPEAKER_00

I know this is a very little thing, Brian, and I know he's well liked. You mentioned him a second ago. Um what was the hurry to give a two-year extension to Luis Terence for? The guy's hitting 185.

SPEAKER_01

I don't think it's much money. I think um he is hitting money.

SPEAKER_00

It was applauded, I guess. And my point was like, yeah, he's a nice defensive player, you know, but but he's batting 185. It's you know what I mean? Like if I have to hear one more time, I would have clutch player. He's batting 185.

SPEAKER_01

I suppose it's just like that. I would suppose it's just like it's hard enough to find backup catchers. Yeah, let's not fart around. We can afford it. Uh let's just get it done so we have to worry about it. Yeah. I don't know. That's what I'm I think it is a little thing. I don't care. I like Terence. 185, no home runs, 11 RBIs. Here's the funny thing, and it's like you know, that this is another endor uh another uh uh indictment against the starting catch trick who's at right now is that you know I'm seeing David Peterson's pitching to a two-something ERA with Terence behind the plate in a seven-something ERA when uh I'm drawing a blank here. Uh Alvarez. Alvarez, thank you, is behind the plate. So I don't know. I mean, we're all this is all nitpicking crap.

SPEAKER_00

Well, what do you think about the what do you think about the young players? You got Carson Benge, he's had off to a bad start, had a couple good weeks, has kind of plateaued a little bit. AJ Ewing looks like he's a good outfielder. I like watching him play a little bit, got a little opt. Someone mentioned they could see him as like a Lenny Dijkstra type, which I thought was a good cop. If you get that, you've got to be thrilled. Uh, a couple of the young guys you've seen, give us a little rundown. As well as we just get the baseball part of Lenny. We should get the baseball part of Lenny. It might be a little inflated, some of his numbers, obviously.

SPEAKER_01

Well, Eric, you'll be happy to know the Mets are already doing that thing that they've done my entire Mets fandom. Is they're talking about they made the trade for Marcus Simeon for Texas, and he's been awful at the plate. He's been decent, pretty good at uh at second base defensively, but not nearly the gold glove guy he was last year in the American League. Eric, good news. I've already heard whispers about, you know, if Simeon just can't get it done, maybe they'll move AJ Ewing to second base. Well, there you go, folks. If we get a kid up here and he's playing well and he's getting comfortable in center field, which is his natural position, let's F with him and put him at second base. I love this idea. This is the Mets thing. This is classic Mets. That's terrific.

SPEAKER_00

Was he an infielder?

SPEAKER_01

I have no idea. I don't have a scouting report on AJ Ewing. I assume that he was at some point because it's like everybody like, well, he's a shortstop. Every great player in high school is a shortstop. They don't stay shortstops.

SPEAKER_00

Okay. Those are the three most important positions they play.

SPEAKER_01

Well, he was a great right fielder in high school. No, he's a great shortstop in high school and became a right fielder when he went to college or something.

SPEAKER_00

100%.

SPEAKER_01

Uh I don't know. Uh yeah, the young guys are fun to watch. But again, if all went went well, AJ Ewing would be, and I I think this would have been the best plan for the young man. AJ Ewing would just be hey, you're you're playing a triple. You're gonna enjoy the summer in Syracuse. We're not pulling you up here to the big buildings to just enjoy it and get lots of seasoning at the triple A level.

SPEAKER_00

But how about the Yankees, huh? Well, two LOL Met things I had to bring up just because it was great fodder on social media was Viento striking out when the ball hits him. I mean, that that is gonna be a 2026 meme or whatever the kids call it, because that's just his classic. And then the other one, uh one of the, I'm sure you followed one of the Mets Twitter sites posted the uh the uh Bobachette Jason Bay com. Yeah, they saw that.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my god. I bought the I I bought a Jason Bay shirzy. Oh, that's a great signing.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_00

Listen, if you don't laugh, you're gonna cry. If you don't laugh, you'll cry, right? That's the old saying they say. So, but listen, there's still plenty of no indifference.

SPEAKER_01

Indifference is the worst thing, and I'm feeling indifferent. And I usually don't I get even my ball club is bad, but this is 1990. First old It'd be great to get the uh yeah, it's this feels like 1992 Mets all over again.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I'm waiting for somebody to spray bleach in the clubhouse.

SPEAKER_00

Love to go back and listen to the Laura Albany's interview we did back in spring training and her predictions for this team, because man, it has not worked out. Again, lots of injuries, Brian. You gotta be fair. Lots of injuries.

SPEAKER_01

And she wasn't alone, and there was a lot of good vibes and hell. Let's let's take let's be honest. I mean, like the the experts, the the greatest experts in the world on this stuff is are the guys in Vegas. And they had them that Mets were packed on most of the boards. If you people follow the if you degenerates follow this sort of thing, most of the boards in Vegas had them at like the third best record in baseball, not in the National League area, in baseball, behind the Yankees and the Dodgers. So uh we are this wasn't it's not like this wasn't all rose-colored Mets fans hoping that they thought they might have a good season.

SPEAKER_00

22 and 32, the tied for the second worst record in the National League. So and how about the and you got a lot of the Atlanta Braves 36 and 18, 8.5 games ahead of Washington. Philadelphia's 527 and 27, Miami 26 and 29. So lots of baseball still to be played. But as we say, we hit the Memorial Day marker, kind of see where your team's at. You guys are 10 under right now. Bit of a hole to climb out of, but we'll see what happens going forward. And the other thing, Brian, we'll know in the next month, really, what their July is going to look like. Because if you're gonna start trading players in July, the Freddie Peraltas of the world, who's a free agent after this season, uh he'd be the most viable candidate. I mean, uh maybe a Devin Williams type, if you want to get out of that contract. Uh, although after his weekend, I'm not sure he had pitched well lately. It was funny though, he was tipping his pitches on Sunday because the Miami Marlins were picking up what he was throwing. So that whole narrative that whole narrative went out the window after three good games in a row. Yeah, that's phenomenal. You know, so anyway. Uh the Yankees, Brian, you mentioned the Yankees. They won two games in a row and two must-have wins for them, Brian. On Sunday, I was in the car on the radio going from uh a high school graduation to a wedding. Our good friend Mark Robbins, his daughter got married on Sunday afternoon. So it was great to be uh reconnect with some friends.

SPEAKER_01

That's right. Mark.

SPEAKER_00

Yep, so he and his uh daughter's wedding. So I was at that. But on the right way there, I heard Dave Sims say, you know what? Be nice to the Yankees and get a little bloop and a blast action here. And sure enough, Grisham gets on Judge Homer's 2-0 win over Tampa Bay. They split the two-game series, and then last night, of all people, 3-2 in the ninth inning, runners on a couple runners on on base, one out. Anthony Volpe comes for the big two-run single to give the Yankees a 4-3 win over Kansas City. Yankees are 32-22, three and a half behind Tampa Bay in the American League East. Red Sox 22-30, still can't get out of their own way. They were off actually on Memorial Day. I know someone's got to be off, but having the Red Sox off on Memorial Day, you've got to do better than that, Brian. Gotta do better. It's always we go through this every year.

SPEAKER_01

We do this podcast for six, seven years. Yeah, I haven't looked at the 4th of July or Labor Day schedules, but I'm guaranteeing you like I wouldn't, you know, you're gonna look up and see, hey, the Yankees are off or the Mets are off or the Dodgers are off. And uh somehow, again, Major Baseball doesn't care and they just trip over themselves all the time.

SPEAKER_00

The 4th of July is a Saturday this year, so all the teams will be playing. The Yankees play the Twins. I had looked this up the other day. The Mets are in Atlanta on the 4th of July. Oh, that'll be fun. 808 first pitch on Fox on the 4th of July. And the Red Sox are on the West Coast against the Angels. 9 38 first pitch on the 4th of July.

SPEAKER_01

So also smart. That's also smart. So if you're a Red Sox fan and you want to go out and watch fireworks, you know, God forbid there'd be day baseball across the board on the 4th of July. No, can't have it. We've got to have 6 30 starting Anaheim, guys. I can't we can't play daytime baseball in Anaheim. Atlanta on July 4th. God, imagine being in Georgia on July 4th. It was probably like 140 degrees. At least it's a night game. I just said that there are going to see a night game, but uh they should still all be playing during the day. I can always find something to bitch about with Major League Baseball.

SPEAKER_00

That's 100%. You're correct. You can always find something to bitch about. Hey, something that's good that's happened in baseball is the Yale baseball team, Brian, made the NCAA tournament. Uh, we were there yesterday when the team uh got the uh word they're going to Oregon to go play in that regional. First time in seven years they've been out there. Just hey, and Princeton won the lacrosse championship, Brian. So heads up, good job by the Ivy League. No NIL money, Brian. They're not getting the transfer portal. These are just kids that are there all four years for the most part. Good academic kids, obviously. And Princeton winning the lacrosse championship, and now Yale make Yale the only team in the state to make the NCAA tournament. No one else made it. No Fairfield, no Central, no Yukon. Yukon got blitzed in the Big East tournament. So Yale representing the state of Connecticut. They'll play Friday night at 8 o'clock. I did want to mention that. Their head coach, Brian Ham. Uh, we had him in our studio last week. He's a terrific guy, won a national championship at Eastern in Division III. Uh, had a lot of success before that at uh was it Amherst or Middlebury? I forget where he was. He was at both. But um, so good for the Yale Bulldogs. Um, one other thing I did want to mention, Brian, before we take a break and go to our last segment is uh Kyle Bush, the NASCAR driver. You follow this, Brian? The guy had 41 years old, had pneumonia and then sepsis and died.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, no, I don't I'm not a big NASCAR f person, but I I I saw that news and I was stunned because I knew the name. Yeah. And I do know some people that were uh that are NASCAR, bigger NASCAR fans than I am, but saying, you know, this is a this is a legend, and at 41 years old. Um it's it's kind of a weird sad story. He wear about how he was sick two weeks ago when he was in a race, I think, up in when up in New York or what I don't know, I don't I might be wrong. On the CD saying he needed to see a doctor. Yeah, and just he said he had a bad sinus infection and bad cough, and like he listened you don't fart around with pneumonia, especially especially double pneumonia, but apparently he and I don't not cast any spurs, apparently he just either didn't think it was that serious or no one around him thought it was that serious until the last minute, and uh it's just it's a bizarre thing to happen to a 41-year-old guy.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, a couple of couple of young kids, man. It's just you know, go to the doctor, folks. If you don't feel good, go to the doctor. I know times are tough and copies and all that other stuff, and you you say to yourself, Oh, it's not that important. It is important, man. And you get sepsis, you don't recover from that most 95% of the time. I'm not a doctor, but you got pneumonia, go see the you can go to the minute clinic at CVS for crying out to check you out.

SPEAKER_01

So get some antibiotics, and you know, it's and again, I don't know if it's just the culture. Well, if this guy bought, you know, it's Kyle Bush, he's got a race. You know, they had the uh the Coca-Cola 600 last night, which is a huge NASCAR race. He was prepping for that, and I guess uh they did have a moment, obviously they had a moment of silence. It's the first time some nobody named Bush has been in a NASCAR race, I guess, since 1979, because he comes from a racing family. Indie 500 did a nice tribute. I did see that yesterday. Indie 500 was held yesterday. Incredible finish, by the way, in the Indy 500, but uh that did do a nice tribute for him. So it was just a sad story from sports, and it does accord, it's one of those things you see them them the thing, and like Kyle Bush, he what? 41 just like I told my wife, who's like, he used to be my favorite driver. He's just he had the he's got the MM car. So yeah, it was just one of those things that you do a double tank when you see the headline.

SPEAKER_00

And I'm not familiar with this name. I saw the headline this morning about an hour ago. Manny Fernandez, a two-time Super Bowl channel. Oh, yeah, Dolphins, 79 years old. He passed away, uh part of that no-name defense. But I was not familiar with him, but he was on those championship teams from 72, 73. You you you said yeah, oh yeah. I did his name did not ring a bell with me.

SPEAKER_01

Great defensive tackle. I remember seeing him on, you know, I used to love to watch those shows, those America teams, America's team shows on the NFL Network where they like do an hour show on a highlight, and they usually pick like three or four guys to speak. And uh you know, like you know, they did the 86 Giants with like Carl Banks and Bill Parcells, and they did uh the 72 Ham uh Dolphins a few years ago with him and Larry Zonka. Really like uh as I I think they said uh on I was reading this today, like an underrated player on that defense. A defensive tackle uh had the Fu Man shoes, 70s mustache, looked like a defensive tackle, had a phenomenal uh playoff performance in that game. And uh yeah, so sort of I did remember that. Like I did, I did know him as being one of those like guys like Nick Budakani or like uh Dick Anderson, Jake Scott, like some of those guys from that no-name defense. And uh yeah, so yeah, he was 79, yeah, that makes sense. So, but yeah, apparently I remember the name. Remember he was a really good player, and uh that was kind of sad to see. But like I said, um we used to make fun of those 72 Dolphins teams because every time the last team in the NFL during the season would lose, they'd like raise the glass, like, hey, we're still the only team. Yeah, but it's kind of sad because I mean, and he's the latest one. You start losing these guys with this nowadays.

SPEAKER_00

Well, in that Super Bowl 7, Brian, when they beat Washington 17-0. You mentioned underrated defensive player. He had 17 tackles in the game.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and they they said he someone said this morning, I don't know if it was like, you know, I one of the one of the talking heads on NFL network on the NFL said uh, you know, this guy probably should have been the MVP of that Super Bowl.

SPEAKER_00

I don't know who was, but he probably yeah, he probably should have been seventeen seventeen tackles in the sack of the Super Bowl game. Not a bad day at the office. So anyway. All right, we're gonna take a timeout. We come back. Brian's got some uh pop culture stuff we need to talk about. I want to ask him a couple things I've been watching too, and then we got some birthdays here on the ADBC podcast.

SPEAKER_01

All right, all right. Well, let me tell you right now, Oswell wants to make sure you could afford a good night's sleep. That's why they are offering the Oswald Queen mattress, still as low as $350. SPEAKER_00

Before Brian does his birthdays, I always like to type what what people are watching. Uh, I don't remember how I stumbled upon this, but uh my wife and I, Brian, are watching a comedy on the Apple TV called Margot's Got Money Troubles. Have you heard of this? Never heard of it. I have no idea. You could be making this up. I've never heard of it. Well, write it down right now. Margot's Got Money Troubles. Um L. Fanning is it is the star of the show.

SPEAKER_01

Michelle one of the fanning girls, like Dakota's sister or something.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah, what Dakota and all them. I don't know any of them. But El Fanning is the star of the show. Michelle Pfeiffer is her mother. Nick Offerman is her father, who I love.

SPEAKER_01

Yep.

SPEAKER_00

Um uh Greg Kneer's in it as well. Nicole Kidman makes a little cameo, but I think it's eight episodes, one season so far. Where I think we're in season episode four, so we're halfway through the first season. But Margot's Got Money Troubles. I wanted to recommend that if you get a chance. Husband, wife, whatever, you're looking for something to watch with your partner, go watch that. It's a great show. I really enjoyed it.

SPEAKER_01

You know, it's interesting. You mentioned you roll off some of those names, and like Harrison Ford, you know, he's got that show now also on Apple. Shrinking is great. Shrinkage, shrinking, yeah, with Jason uh forget Seagull or Seagall, however you say his name. I hope it's not Seagal, but it makes me think of Steven Seagal. Um but you get some like big, I mean, you know, the B you get some Hollywood movie heavyweights that are now doing uh uh TV on these streaming services. It's kind of cool. It's kind of cool to see.

SPEAKER_00

The other thing, too, I wanted to talk about real quick. One last sports thing is um how about this potential of June 16th, Brian? June 16th on the calendar, Tuesday. Oh, I know where you're going. Go ahead. Yep. U.S. Open at Shinnick. France versus Senegal in a World Cup match at MetLife in the afternoon, and then potentially a game six between game six of the NBA finals and the Knicks at 8:30. Not a bad day in New York City that day, a couple weeks away.

SPEAKER_01

Hey, listen, we've heard, you know, we and I don't get we don't want to get into it, although I can I have a I know why. We all know the hotel rooms, I know, I get it. A lot of the World Cup is they're having some trouble. Not the the crowds are not shaping up the way they thought, but it'll still in East Rutherford, because I've been I made the mistake of one time like driving home thing in the airport in Newark on a day like a huge soccer match is being held. They'll fill the seats at Mid Life. Yeah, make no mistake about that. 100%. That'll be a function reminds me of the June. Kind of reminds me of like that June 17th, night where they actually did a 30 for 30 on it, June 17th, 1994, when you had the Knicks playing at night against the Rockets, and you had like the Rangers had a parade that same day that afternoon. Arnold Palmer was like making history at the U.S. Open. And then oh yeah, then and then then uh yeah, then the OJ thing with the with the Bronco. Yeah, a little bit. A little bit. Hopefully we don't have that we don't have that type of drama. That will be a fun. I'm trying at the laugh. Are the Mets playing at home that weekend? Are we just gonna up the ante? Are we are we gonna up the excitement of the New York Tri-State area? Are the Mets going that weekend?

SPEAKER_00

All right, you only got a that'll be fun. That'll be fun. You only got a couple minutes left, Brian. Uh let me click, hold on, real quick. I got the schedule right here in front of me. June 16th, a Tuesday night. Uh the Mets are in Cincinnati. The Yankees are home at 7 o'clock. So there you go. Against the White Sox. All right, you got a couple birthdays? Lay them on me before we wrap it up here.

SPEAKER_01

Oh my goodness gracious. You know, it's been a long week. Uh, so yeah, let's uh let's week with some laughs. You know, a lot of people that believe a lot of people love Mike Myers. He makes some laughs. Eric, you big uh uh Wayne's World fan, are you? No, I'm not, but go right ahead. Yeah, me neither, not really. I don't even like that Queen song that much. I think it's overrated. Anyway, but Mike Myers is celebrating a birthday this week. Is he he's Canadian, Eric.

SPEAKER_00

I didn't think he had that, but he's I did, yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. Mike Myers, 60, 63, or 69.

SPEAKER_00

Let's say 63.

SPEAKER_01

He is 63. All right, yeah. Actually, these last three all make me feel really old. Stevie Nicks, no deduction needed, Fleetwood Mac, phenomenal solo career. And it's impressive when you realize that she's turning, you know, a significant age this year. Or this week. She's 75, 77, or 80. 85. I said significant. I probably shouldn't have said it. I said it's probably she's actually 77. Although I think when you get older, every goddamn year is a significant age. But yes, she's 77. Sorry if I misled you. You did. You did.

SPEAKER_00

Hey, you know what the old saying is as you get older, it's better to be seen than viewed. So let's keep it up to Stevie next. Keep going. All right, we get next.

SPEAKER_01

Todd Bridges, uh Arnold's big brother from Difference Strokes. If you're our age, we were little kids when Difference Strokes was on the air back in the late 70s, early 80s. We're not little anymore. That means Todd Bridges ain't little anymore. But he is the only surviving cast member of Different Strokes. So on that happy note, let's uh guess his birthday, Eric. Is he 57, 59, or 61? He's 61. He is 61. Which again, apparently, if you made it, if you were one of the kids on that show to make it at 61, it was a goddamn miracle. So, Todd, enjoy your birthday. Last guy, last when we talk about football, but this guy looking live and it's all today. Great show, groundbreaking show. This guy is still around. He's still doing the sports, not on a national level, but he's still around. He's iconic. Brett Musk program has a birthday today, Eric, legendary broadcaster. NFL, basketball, all that jazz. Uh 50 years ago today. Next week he did the uh is the uh Sun Celtics Game 5. He did that call. So if he did that call 50 years ago today, you can he's probably not all that young. Is he 81, 87, or 92? 82. He's 87. I thought it pretty gave you a pretty good hit, but okay. Apparently he was like 20 steps. 37 when he did the Knicks Suns game back in 1977. The famous game back in 1976.

SPEAKER_00

Before we wrap here, we got 10 seconds. Cheapest ticket for the Knicks Game 3 NBA Finals, $3,600. Good luck with that.

SPEAKER_01

I'll be just getting into my wallet. Let me just go hit the catch machine there and uh all right.

SPEAKER_00

That'll do it for this edition of the EDBZ Podcast. I'm Eric Keys Brian. Till next time, Brian. Say goodbye. See ya.
